It’s hard to believe it’s already Thursday. It seems that by the time we get into the rhythm of schedule here, it is time to head home. On Monday , it seemed like we had a lot of time to get everything done that needed to get done, but the three days have just flown by. We have one day left to enjoy the weather and then we’ll be heading back into winter. Tomorrow, we will all be working hard to get as much done as we can.

House Painting

House Painting

The other two groups are both working on houses that are almost done. One group is working in New Orleans East and they are hoping to be able to complete everything tomorrow. They have spent the week doing touch up painting, caulking, and finishing off all the little things that got missed, They have also been cleaning. SBP makes sure that when the owners move in, the house is as clean as it would be if it were brand new. Our other group working in Treme. They have been learning how to lay laminate floors, painting the exterior of the house and finishing up the interior touchup painting. Their house is not quite finished yet, but it is close. I had a chance to finish up a house last year, and it is a good feeling to see the house come together. It also makes it easier to leave at the end of the week, knowing that it won’t take much more work to get the homeowners back home.

Painting siding

Painting siding

At our site, we have finished building the floor joist sections and painting the siding. We have been painting the siding for the past two days, and the weather has been cooperating. It has been warm and sunny so that the paint dries very quickly. It is a little strange to paint siding when it isn’t actually on the house, but we had a system to move the boards from the pallet to the benches, paint them, and then stack them up on another pallet. This afternoon, we finally got to the last round of painting. We had 14 boards left and were waiting for the first coat to dry when the temperature dropped the wind picked up and we saw dark clouds looming in the sky over the warehouse. We rushed to get the second coat on, and as we were finishing, the rain started. We carried the boards into the warehouse as fast as we could, but not before they got rained on. We’ll find out tomorrow whether or not we got them in fast enough.

Fridays are usually hard. I want to stay and finish what we’ve started. I definitely want to spend more time in the warm weather, but part of me is ready to go home, snow and all. I know the work will get done. There will be a new group of volunteers here next week to pick up where we left off, and when they go home, there will be more. Our house will be finished (and with our house, it will be “finished” three different times). So tomorrow, we’ll work hard, have fun with our group and our site supervisors and enjoy the sunshine for one more day.
